Abstract

Indonesia merupakan negara dengan keanekaragaman primata tertinggi ketiga di dunia, namun populasi primata—khususnya monyet ekor panjang (Macaca fascicularis atau MEP)—menghadapi ancaman serius. Ancaman ini terutama disebabkan oleh perdagangan ilegal, eksploitasi, dan meningkatnya tren pemeliharaan satwa eksotis. Situasi diperparah oleh minimnya edukasi konservasi, lemahnya penegakan hukum, serta normalisasi eksploitasi primata oleh media dan figur publik. Upaya peningkatan kesadaran, khususnya di kalangan generasi muda di Jawa Timur, dapat dilakukan melalui pendekatan inovatif seperti game yang dapat menyampaikan pesan perlindungan MEP secara menarik dan interaktif. Perancangan game ini menggunakan metode riset seperti depth interview dengan pemangku kepentingan terkait, wawancara dengan desainer video game, studi literatur, studi eksperimental, prototyping, serta user testing kepada target audiens. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis hingga menghasilkan kata kunci “stop domestikasi, kembalikan monyet ekor panjang ke habitat asli”, yang menjadi dasar dalam pengembangan gameplay. Pemain diajak menelusuri berbagai babak yang dirancang untuk membangun empati terhadap MEP dan konflik yang dihadapinya. Hasil perancangan ini adalah game adventure side-scrolling berjudul “Monkey, Are You Okey?” dengan alur cerita linear yang menggambarkan konflik internal dan eksternal karakter utama. Dikembangkan untuk platform komputer, game ini mengusung pendekatan naratif yang dekat dengan kehidupan masyarakat, sehingga diharapkan mampu menghibur sekaligus meningkatkan kesadaran publik akan pentingnya pencegahan domestikasi monyet ekor panjang.

Indonesia is the country with the third-highest primate biodiversity in the world. However, primate populations—particularly long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis or MEP)—are facing serious threats. These threats mainly stem from illegal wildlife trade, exploitation, and the growing trend of exotic pet ownership. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of conservation education, weak law enforcement, and the normalization of primate exploitation by media and public figures. Raising awareness, especially among younger generations in East Java, can be pursued through innovative approaches such as educational games that convey messages about long-tailed macaques protection in an engaging and interactive way. The design of this game employed research methods such as in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders, interviews with video game designers, literature studies, experimental studies, prototyping, and user testing with the target audience. The data collected was analyzed and led to the formulation of the key message “stop domestication, return long-tailed macaques to their natural habitat,” which served as the foundation for developing an adventure-style gameplay with side-scrolling mechanics. Players are invited to explore various levels designed to build empathy toward the long-tailed macaques and the conflicts they face. The result of this project is a prototype of a computer game titled "Monkey, Are You Okey?"—an adventure side-scrolling game with a linear narrative focusing on the resolution of both internal and external conflicts of the main character. Through a narrative approach that closely reflects real-life community issues, the game aims not only to entertain but also to raise awareness about the importance of preventing the domestication of long-tailed macaques.
