Abstract

This research aims to enhance the functionality of a tour guide robot within the ITS Research and Innovation Gallery by designing and implementing Multi-Layered Particle Swarm Optimization (MLPSO) based on Voronoi diagrams as the global planner and an Artificial Potential Field with a virtual point mechanism as the local planner. This method was selected to address the computational efficiency challenges of PSO as a global planner and to prevent the local minima trap in dynamic environments caused by structural layout changes and the presence of visitors. Based on the test results, MLPSO successfully reduced computational time by 5 times faster than the standard PSO planner, decreasing from an average of 1087.79 milliseconds in standard PSO to an average of 214.07 milliseconds in MLPSO. The evaluation of MLPSO against A* indicates a computational time trade-off required to generate safer and smoother paths. In local planner testing under sudden, unmapped obstacles, the proposed method successfully avoided collisions and achieved 40 direct successes out of 40 trials with a lightweight computational load averaging 7.3 ± 0.1%. Furthermore, physical robot implementation of MLPSO-APF demonstrated a 100% success rate in reaching the target across 10 trials without colliding with sudden obstacles, despite being affected by odometry drift, wheel slip, and other external factors. The designed and proposed path planning module proved to be robust in facing the challenges of dynamic environments.
