Abstract

The cultural heritage of temple complexes from the Kanjuruhan Kingdom in Malang, East Java, faces a dual threat: physical degradation due to natural factors and insufficient digital documentation for future generations. Candi Badut, built around 760 CE and recognized as the oldest temple in East Java, holds significant historical and philosophical value yet remains largely undocumented in digital form. This situation is further complicated by the fact that the roof structure (Swarloka) has collapsed entirely, leaving no original stones sufficient for physical restoration, while several other reliefs and statues remain but fall short of the minimum percentage required by cultural heritage regulations for physical restoration. As a result, digital reconstruction and preservation represent the only viable means of presenting the temple's complete form to the public. This design project aims to develop a web-based interactive media platform that integrates 3D models generated through Photogrammetry techniques, serving simultaneously as a digital archiving tool and a public education medium. The research employs a qualitative approach using a Research and Development (R&D) model based framework. The methodology encompasses literature review, field observation, in-depth interviews with experts in Photogrammetry, historical studies, and interactive media development, as well as data acquisition using a DSLR camera and UAV drone. The data acquisition process yielded 297 photographs totaling 3 GB of raw data, subsequently processed using Polycam and Luma Labs AI to generate two types of 3D representations: mesh geometry for macro-level navigation and point cloud (Gaussian Splatting) for immersive visualization. The final output is a web-based interactive platform titled "Echoes of the Past," enabling users to explore a 3D model of Candi Badut, access detailed views of reliefs and statues through a click-to-inspect feature, and engage with a digital reconstruction of the missing roof structure (Swarloka). The platform is designed for a primary target audience of individuals aged 20–25 with an interest in cultural preservation and historical heritage. This project is expected to contribute to the digital preservation of the Kanjuruhan Kingdom's cultural heritage as an archive accessible across generations, while also serving as a replicable model for Photogrammetry -based interactive media development for other heritage sites throughout Indonesia.
