Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies and the increasing complexity of construction projects located in remote areas with geographically distributed teams demand more adaptive and data-driven project management approaches. Conventional construction project management practices that rely heavily on physical presence at project sites often face challenges related to coordination efficiency, limited information transparency, and delays in decision-making. This study aims to develop and validate a Remote Construction Project Management (RCPM) framework integrated with Construction 4.0 technologies to enhance efficiency, transparency, and control in remote construction projects.
The research methodology includes literature synthesis, conceptual framework development, and a case study conducted on a jetty barge-to-barge (BTB) construction project located in a remote area. The proposed RCPM framework consists of five main layers: the strategic layer, organizational layer, technology integration system layer, operational process layer, and feedback and continuous improvement layer. Model validation was carried out through an expert-based evaluation involving five stakeholder groups—academicians, project owners, EPC contractors, planning consultants, and supervision consultants—using a Likert-scale questionnaire. In addition, a two-month framework implementation simulation was conducted to observe its practical impacts. The results indicate that the RCPM framework achieved an average validation score of 4.3, demonstrating a high level of acceptance and implementation feasibility. The most significant impacts were observed in improved project control, enhanced data transparency, and faster decision-making based on real-time information. Nevertheless, challenges related to infrastructure availability and organizational readiness were also identified. This study concludes that the proposed RCPM framework is implementable, provides tangible practical benefits, and contributes to the advancement of digital construction project management literature.
