Abstract

Gas leaks in industrial environments pose significant threats requiring rapid mitigation. This research develops an indoor gas source localization system using an omnidirectional mobile robot with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) navigation. UWB is emphasized in this study due to its high-accuracy indoor localization capability and ability to provide real-time absolute position information. These characteristics make UWB suitable for supporting mobile robot navigation in indoor environments where visual access is limited and odometry may suffer from accumulated drift. The system integrates gas sensor array for initial gas detection, a Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) for gas category classification, a stereo electronic nose for gas source direction estimation, and fuzzy logic for local search control. Robot position information is obtained using three UWB anchors and one tag through trilateration. The system was evaluated in five scenarios with different home and gas source positions. The experimental results show that the BPNN classified gas categories with an accuracy of 98,27%. The UWB system achieved a dynamic average positioning error of 0,12049 m and an RMSE of 0,13439 m. In the overall system evaluation, the robot successfully detected gas with an average detection time of 36,76 s, navigated toward the gas source in all scenarios, estimated the gas source position with an average error of 0,343 m, and autonomously returned to its initial position. These results indicate that the integration of the gas sensor array, BPNN, stereo electronic nose, fuzzy logic, and UWB navigation can effectively support indoor gas source localization.
