Abstract

In an increasingly competitive business environment, companies are required to manage their supply chains effectively to enhance competitiveness and profitability. One strategy adopted by retailers is strategic inventory, which refers to intentionally holding inventory as a bargaining tool against manufacturers in subsequent periods. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of e-commerce has made product reviews an important factor influencing consumers' perceived product quality and purchasing decisions, while rebates are commonly used as incentives to encourage purchases and increase the number of reviews. This study aims to develop a decision-making model for a two-echelon supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a retailer by incorporating strategic inventory, product reviews, and rebate incentives. The model is formulated as a two-period Stackelberg game under two scenarios: a retailer offering product reviews without rebates and a retailer offering product reviews with rebate incentives. In the first period, the manufacturer determines the wholesale price, after which the retailer decides the order quantity, sales quantity, and rebate in the second scenario. In the second period, the manufacturer again determines the wholesale price, and the retailer decides the replenishment quantity by considering the remaining inventory carried over from the first period. The model is solved using optimization analysis and backward induction to obtain the equilibrium solution. The results indicate that holding cost is the most influential parameter affecting strategic inventory decisions. In addition, production cost reduces supply chain profitability by increasing the wholesale price, review effort decreases the effectiveness of product review generation, and review sensitivity increases demand in the second period. Furthermore, the rebate strategy does not always generate higher profits than the non-rebate scenario; however, it performs better under conditions of low holding costs, low production costs, and high review sensitivity.
