Abstract

Micro Enterprise owners face creative constraints in social media promotion activities rooted in their structural position within social networks. Single-layer social network literature has not addressed how tie configuration affects creativity when the same actor operates across multiple relational layers simultaneously, and structural holes theory has not been tested for its boundary conditions in multiplex layered networks. This study analyzes the effect of heterogeneous layered network structure on individual Micro Enterprise creativity. Data were collected from 228 UMK in Kuningan and Bandung Regency, through a community service partnership with Universitas Prasetiya Mulya, using structured interviews, digital ethnography, and snowball sampling, analyzed through a multilayer graph based exploratory explanatory design. Among 228 nodes across five relational layers, structural role classification reveals a two cluster pattern rather than a single gradient. Cross-layer Bridge and Multi-layer Connector, two node types with high cross-layer participation breadth, record statistically equivalent creative weight, significantly higher than Domain Specialist and Peripheral Participant, whose participation breadth is low and also equivalent to each other. Cross-layer participation breadth correlates strongly with active peer connectivity (r=0.60), yet the proportion of active peer connectivity still varies significantly among actors with comparable participation breadth, 82.1% in Cross-layer Bridge versus 63.6% in Multi-layer Connector (chi-Bquare=88.21, p<0.001). Core and peripheral positions show no difference in accessing inspiration sources during the generation and elaboration stages, but diverge sharply at the championing and implementation stages. Among nodes with the highest knowledge diffusion capacity, only those in core positions have active peer connectivity and can execute their diffusion, while peripherally positioned nodes lack this connectivity, leaving their diffusion capacity latent. These findings extend structural holes theory; brokerage advantage in multiplex networks does not stem from a single position, but from cross-layer participation breadth that forms bridging potential, while active peer connectivity separately determines the conversion of that potential into creative output at the championing and implementation stages. This research's practical benefit, actors already broadly engaged across layers but lacking active peer connection should prioritize forming that tie, rather than adding new institutional layers.
