Abstract

============================================================================================================= Sandwich Composite is one type of composite structure consisting of two flat composites and cores. The purpose of using composites is to obtain better mechanical properties than its constituent materials. So far, the cores that normally used are polyurethane, PVC foam, and honeycomb. However, the material that used as the core is expensive and not environmentally friendly. So, the core of natural origin is being developed, such as balsa wood. Application of this sandwich composite is for vehicle chassis. The study was conducted by simulating the specimens made of carbon fiber woven as the skin and balsa wood as the core using finite element software. The specimen is modeled with the dimensions 50x500x10 mm. The bending and torsional test simulation was done with a given force 1581.8 N and a given torque 126 N.m. The variation of additional layer is given by using 6 variations number of layers and 3 variations of fiber orientation, 0°, 30°, and 45°. In bending test simulation, the smallest total deformation is 0.39637 mm, it is occurs in the sandwich composite which has 10 layers and 45° of fiber orientation and the lowest maximum principal stress value is 3.3429 MPa, it is occurs in the sandwich composite which has 10 layers and 0° of fiber orientation. In torsional test, the smallest total deformation is 0.15256 mm, it is occurs in the sandwich composite which has 10 layers and 0° of fiber orientation and the lowest equivalent stress value of Von-Mises is 11.033 MPa, it is occurs in the sandwich composite which has 10 layers and 45° of fiber orientation. Based on the fiber orientation, number of layers, and torsional stiffness, the most optimal specimen in bending and torsion test simulation is a sandwich composite which has 10 layers and 45° of fiber orientation with 1712.65 Nm/deg as the value of torsional stiffness.
