Abstract

When earthquake occured, there are three types of waves that generated: (1) Acoustic wave (speed 1 km / s) produced close to the epicenter, it propagates upward and reach elevation of the F layer’s ionosphere within 10 minutes or more. (2) Gravity wave (speed 0.3 km/s), generated from tsunami wave resulted from large earthquakes, and (3) Rayleigh wave (speed 4 km / s) resulted from surface wave and propagate away from the epicenter. Acoustic waves generated perpendicularly from the earth's crust during an earthquake propagate to the ionosphere, then create electron density aberrations. This phenomenon detected as CIDs (Coseismic Ionosphere Disturbances), it is TEC fluctuations that occur 15 minutes to 1 hour after the earthquake occurs. As a result of its deviations, the electromagnetic waves emitted by GNSS satellites will be delayed as they pass through the ionsfer approximately 300km from the earth's surface. The ionospheric variation is observed at this time-delay based on the quantity of Total Electron Content (TEC). The TEC value is expressed in TECU, where 1 TECU equals 1016 electrons / m2. The TEC anomaly value will illustrate the magnitude of the disturbance caused by the earthquake.
Indonesia as a frequent earthquake country, monitoring needs to be done to determine the atmospheric changes caused by the earthquake, one of them is by TEC analysis on the ionosphere layer. In this research, we observe the change of TEC two days before, when and two days after the earthquake in West Sumatra on March 2nd, 2016 with GNSS data processing method from CORS station owned by Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) located in Sumatera area, CAIR, CBKT, CPAR, CPDG, and CSEL stations. Results from data processing showed TEC anomalies appearing at 11 to 15 minutes after an earthquake with anomalous magnitude anomali 2 – 3.5 TECU recorded by GPS satellites number 17 and 0.5 – 1.7 TECU recorded by Glonass satellite number 14.
