Abstract
Kampas rem merupakan salah satu komponen di dalam sistem pengereman pada suatu alat transportasi. Namun tidak semua bahan kampas rem berasal dari bahan-bahan logam saja yang menimbulkan efek samping yang tidak ramah lingkungan. Dengan itu, komposit memiliki peran untuk mendesain penggunaan bahan alami sebagai kampas alternatif ramah lingkungan.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk Membuat kampas rem kereta api dari bahan alam (serat waru dan pasir silika) serta mengetahui pengaruh fraksi berat pasir silika terhadap sifat-sifat mekanik kampas rem. Variasi fraksi berat pasir silika yang digunakan adalah 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% dan 10%. Sifat mekanik yang diteliti dengan beberapa pengujian, yaitu densitas, kekerasan, koefisien gesek, keausan dan impact. Dari hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa fraksi berat pasir silika mempengaruhi sifat mekanik kampas rem. Semakin besar fraksi berat pasir silika yang digunakan, semakin bertambah nilai kekerasan yang digunakan. Akan tetapi nilai densitas, koefisien gesek, keausan, dan energi serap impact yang cenderung menurun.

Brake Canvass is one of parts in transportation braking system. However, not all of brake canvass materials comes from metals that make side effect to environment. Therfore, composite has role to design to make brake canvass come from natural materials as alternative way to make environment-friendly. This research is intended to make railway brake canvass made from natural materials (waru fiber and silica sand) and know the influence of silica sand‟s weight fraction to mechanical properties of brake canvass. The variation of silica sand‟s weight fraction used are 2%. 4%, 6%, 8% dan 10%. To study the mechanical properties by using several tests impact test. The result of the tests shown that weight fraction of silica sand has influence to mechanical properties of sample. It would be increase the hardness and decrease another mechanical properties such as density, friction coefficient, wear, and energy absorption of impact test.
