Abstract

This research tried to improve lead-acid battery cycle life using two kinds of carbon with different surface area and porosity type. Carbon materials used in this research is activated carbon which is norit and acetylene black. Though research that has been done by D. Pavlov, P. Nikolov., T. Rogachev mixing carbon into activated mass, this research tried to increase effectivity of carbon adding by coat it to the surface of negative electrode.
This research started by coating of Pb with carbon (norit and acetylene black). Coating was done by carbon powder that has been added by CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) with ratio 5:1, then added by few drops of aquades until has paste texture. Second step of the experiment is assembled test plate. Test plate assembly consist of positive and negative plate connected by nylon string and given separator paper between plates. The third step is testing the lead-acid battery that has been coated by norit and acetylene black. Charging and discharging test using 8-Channel Battery Analyzer and Cyclic Voltammetry.
The results shown in this research are carbon materials coating in negative plate affected lead-acid battery cycle ife. Negative plate coating with acetylene black has more cycle life which are 649 cycles. Followed by norit with 11 cycles and the least of all standard plate with only 9 cycles. The result from cyclic voltammetry (potentiostat) is plate capacity, which highest capacity is norit and lowest capacity is acetylene black.
