Abstract

Advances in shipping technology are in line with the development of the shipbuilding material itself. One of the advanced materials that have the appropriate technology for ship construction is Sandwich material. Sandwich material for ship industry in Indonesia need to be studied, especially in its core. In this research, sandwich material is developed by using core material made from unsaturated polyester resin with waste eggshell material as the filler. The eggshell material is processed into powder and filtered using mesh size of 50, and then the powder is carbonized. The core materials are composed of resin and the eggshell powder with the ratio of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 35% and 40% of total weight.
The identification of core material characteristics is performed by experiments that include tests of chemical composition, density, tensile strength, hardness, and compressive strength of the material. The result of this study on the core shows that the more eggshell powder in the composition the higher the mass density. The composition of 30% eggshell mixture produced core material with the highest mechanical properties with tensile strength of 28.132 MPa, Modulus of Elasticity of 300.3 MPa and elongation of 22.6%.
Tests on sandwich plate with steel face sheets are conducted on the structure with 2 core compositions having the first and second highest mechanical properties, these are 30% and 20% eggshell compositions. The sandwich materials are characterized using density and bending tests. To obtain their dynamic properties, vibration tests on sandwich plate in non-defect and defect conditions are performed. The results of the bending test show that the highest stress of 95.063 N /mm2 is obtained in the structure with 30% eggshell composition. The vibration tests show that in the non-defect condition, the natural frequency of the sandwich structure with 20% eggshell powder composition is 487.5 Hz and that of 30% eggshell powder composition is 443.71 Hz. In the defect condition their natural frequency for 20% and 30% eggshell compositions are 439.9 Hz and 429.2 Hz respectively.
Simulation on the application of sandwich panels on the main deck of container ship is performed using computer software based on finite element method. It is found that the weight reduction of sandwich construction on one panel compared with conventional construction is 6,6% for 20% eggshell composition and 4.8% for 30% eggshell composition.
