Abstract
Shaft adalah bagian terpenting pada mesin uap II Pabrik Gula Gending, dimana shaft berfungsi sebagai penyalur gaya mesin uap dengan mesin penggilingan. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis faktor penyebab dan mekanisme kegagalan yang terjadi pada shaft. Beberapa pengujian dilakukan untuk mendukung analisis ini. Beberapa pengujian tersebut yaitu pengamatan visual, pengujian komposisi, pengujian metallography, pengujian kekerasan, SEM dan XRD. Hasil uji komposisi menunjukan material shaft tersebut tidak memenuhi standar AISI 4340. Pengujian metallography menunjukan pada daerah dekat patahan memiliki nilai grain size yang lebih tinggi dibanding daerah jauh dari patahan. Pengujian SEM dilakukan pada permukaan patahan dan hasil dari SEM menunjukan adanya retakan dan garis striasi halus akibat adanya pembebanan berulang. Uji kekerasan dilakukan pada 3 daerah yaitu daerah initial crack, propagation dan final crack. Uji kekerasan menunjukan bahwa nilai kekerasan yang dekat patahan lebih besar daripada daerah jauh patahan. Hasil XRD menunjukan nilai regangan kristal pada daerah patahan lebih besar daripada daerah jauh patahan. Setelah dilakukannya pengujian-pengujian tersebut didapatkan faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya kegagalan komponen shaft pada mesin uap II, yaitu kesalahan pemilihan material yang tidak sesuai standar, sehingga sifat mekanik yang ada dibawah standar. Mekanisme kegagalan komponen shaft pada mesin uap II diawali adanya initial crack pada keyway karena adanya pemusatan tegangan pada daerah tersebut dan kemudian retakan merambat pada permukaan sebelum terjadi final crack dikarenakan shaft tidak mampu menahan tegangan yang terjadi, sehingga menyebabkan fatigue failure.

Shaft is the most important part of the steam engine II Gending Sugar Factory, where the shaft is force distributor from steam engine to milling machine. This research was conducted to analyze the causal factors and failure mechanisms that occur in the shaft. Several tests were carried out to support this analysis, there are visual observation, composition test, hardness test, mettalography, SEM and XRD. From the composition test results it was found that the shaft material did not fullfil the AISI 4340’s standard. From metallography testing it was found that the area near the crack had a higher grain size value than the area far from the crack. SEM testing was carried out on the crack surface and the results of SEM showed cracks and smooth striation lines due to repeated and continuous loading. The hardness test was carried out in 3 areas, namely the initial crack, propagation and final crack area from the fault area to the area far from the fault. The hardness value near the crack was greater than the far of the crack area. From the XRD results, the crystal strain value in the crack area is greater than the far of the crack area. After doing the test, the factors that caused the failure of the shaft components in the steam engine II were made, namely the error of material selection for standard that use of Gending Sugar Factory, because of that the mechanical properties is below the standard. The failure mechanism of shaft components in steam engine II begins with an initial crack on the keyway due to the concentration of stress on the area and then the cracks propagate on the surface before final cracks occur because the shaft is unable to withstand the stresses that occur.
