Abstract

Sorbitol plant is a plant engaged in the low-calorie sugar industry. The sorbitol industry is considered very strategic because it is widely used in various industries with consumption growth rates increasing by more than 3% per year. At present, Indonesia only has 3 sorbitol plants, it needs an increase in production capacity to avoid a sorbitol balance deficit. Corn starch was chosen as the main raw material because it has a high starch content and abundant amount in Indonesia. Making sorbitol from raw materials of corn starch through two main process stages, the first stage is hydrolysis or the process of changing starch (starch) into glucose using enzymes and the second stage is the process of converting glucose into sorbitol by catalytic hydrogenation process. The process of making sorbitol by catalytic hydrogenation is carried out by reacting a high pressure glucose and hydrogen gas solution by adding Raney Nickel catalyst in a batch type hydrogenation reactor. Hydrogen gas enters from the bottom of the reactor by bubbling and glucose solution is fed from the top of the reactor so that a reaction occurs. The product produced is a non-crystallizing syrup sorbitol grade with a concentration of 70% or if the SNI is called Type-015 liquid sorbitol. This sorbitol plant is planned to be established in Lamongan Regency, East Java Province, precisely in the Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus (KEK) located in Brondong District. In consideration of the availability of raw materials, land, labor market value, and its strategic location for marketing. The sorbitol plant is planned to operate continuously 24 hours for 330 days per year of operation with a planned production capacity of 15,000 tons / year, a workforce of 80 people / day, raw material requirements of corn starch 12,451 tons / year. From the analysis of economic calculations carried out, the establishment of the sorbitol plant requires an investment of Rp 555,957,931,022, with an IRR of 19.44%, POT for 4.43 years, and BEP of 24.01%. In terms of technical and economic aspects, the sorbitol plant from corn starch is considered feasible to be established.
