Abstract

Electronic nose (e-nose) is an electronic instrument created to be able to recognize odors by imitating the working principle of the human olfactory system. In general, e-nose is designed and built for stand-alone applications. The implementation of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology and internet of things (IoT) on the e-nose system can make it scalable and make it applicable from home to industrial scale. In the previous studies, an IoT-based e-nose system was developed, where with this system, a network consisting of several e-nose devices can conduct distributed measurements. In their study, cloud centric architecture was used. All data is collected, processed, and analyzed in the cloud. From the literature study that we found, this system produces high latency with low scalability. In this study fog architecture was used. Where, some data is aggregated and processed before being sent to the cloud. From classification testing, the system is able to predict samples with an accuracy rate of 78%. While the scalability testing is carried out, 300 sensor nodes are able to be connected to the system simultaneously when using 8 minutes of data, and reach 500 sensor nodes when using 6 minutes of data.
