Abstract
Steel is common material used in floating marine buildings such as ships and offshore oil rig. In fabrication of marine building, welding is used to connect steel which is the main material in its construction. The welding process commonly used in fabricating marine buildings is FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding). This is because FCAW is suitable for welding all positions and various configurations. However, in welding often finds welding defects such as angular distortion. Angular distortion is caused by thermal strain between weld metal and parent metal which produces a stress which causes an internal force. Control of angular distortion that can be done is to choose the right welding sequence. In this Final Project research, numerical and experimental study is used to know the welding sequences effect on angular distortion in ASTM A36 steel panels with FCAW welding. From the results of study it is known that the variation of welding sequence 2 by symmetry produces smallest average angular distortion due to lower peak temperatures compared to the variation of welding sequence 1 in a straight manner and the variation of welding sequence 3 by jump. In addition, intersection of stiffener also minimizes angular distortion.
