Abstract

The application of biodiesel as fuel bring several problems. Characteristics of biodiesel related to high content of unsaturated fatty acids make biodiesel suspectible to oxidation. Biodiesel oxidation is influenced by several factors such as air contact, light contact, temperature and water contamination during the biodiesel storage period. Water contamination can lead to microbial formation that can degrade biodiesel. The oxidation process on biodiesel produces acidic compounds which increase total acid number of biodiesel. This study investigates the effect of brown macro-algae Sargassum polycystum extract biodiesel stability. Oxidation inhibition activity was observed during storage for six weeks by testing the total acid number every two weeks. Observation of biodiesel degradation factor was carried out by testing Total Plate Count (TPC) to determine microbial growth in biodiesel. Observations were made on the treatment of biodiesel with the addition of brown seaweed extract at concentrations of 500 ppm and 1000 ppm, biodiesel with the addition of synthetic antioxidant BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) at a concentration of 1000 ppm, and biodiesel without addition. Biodiesel doped with brown seaweed extract at a concentration of 1000 ppm shows the best improvement of biodiesel stability.
