Abstract

Realisasi produksi Finish Mill berada di bawah capaian target pada periode Oktober 2013 - Februari 2014 yang disebabkan kerusakan berulang pada chain bucket elevator. Mengatasi hal tersebut telah dilakukan pergantian chain asli BZK1200 dengan chain ER984. Namun, tidak ada evaluasi dan analisa yang telah dibuat untuk menjelaskan penyebab kerusakan tersebut. Tugas akhir ini menganalisa penyebab kerusakan menggunakan metode Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) untuk membuat desain yang lebih baik. Data pendukung berupa gambar kerusakan, downtime history, kondisi aktual operasional, dan datasheet teknik. Pengujian material dilakukan untuk memperoleh jenis material, sifat mekanik dan pola patahan. Jenis material chain adalah low carbon manganese steel AISI 1524. Perhitungan analitis gaya menunjukkan bahwa chain hanya menerima gaya 133.106 kN, jauh di bawah batas yang diizinkan berada di bawah limit stress 1200 kN. Foto SEM pada patahan mengindikasikan terjadinya fatigue failure. Nilai kekerasan material yaitu 47.8 HRC dan nilai ketangguhan yaitu 32.046 Joule, sehingga material sangat keras tetapi getas. Struktur mikro mengindikasikan terjadinya proses heat treatment saat manufaktur. ========== Finish Mill production realization was below the target from October 2013 to February 2014 due to repeated failure of chain bucket elevators. Action has been taken by replacing the original chain BZK1200 with ER984. However, no evaluations and analyzes has been made to explain the cause of failure. The study has analyzed the cause of failure that using Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) method to design a better system. Supporting data are pictures of damage, downtime history, actual operational conditions, and technical datasheet. Material testing is conducted to find the material used, its mechanical properties and fracture patterns. Material used for the chain is low carbon manganese steel AISI 1524. Analytical calculations shown that the chain only received 133.106 kN force, far below the allowable limit of 1200 kN. SEM photo of fracture indicates fatigue failure. Hardness value of the material is 47.8 HRC and the toughness value is 32.046 Joule, so the material is hard but brittle. The microstructure indicates heat treatment process while manufactured.
