Abstract

Mentawai earthquake (2010) and earlier West Sumatera earthquake (2009) have killed more than 400 people and destroyed at least 88,000 homes. Through deep investigation, it is found that the high death rate were caused by several factors, one was by the heaviness of the brick wal. Due to its strength and low density, fiber glassfoam sandwich panel is predicted enable to reduce the negative impacts on structures, as well as the people inside. Various tests of each component of the sandwich panel such as compressive test, shear test and tensile test, were conducted to obtain mechanical properties as input data in finite element program. The finite element program generated the panel dimension that teoritically be able to resist the applied loads such as gravity load, wind load and earthquake load. Verification through experimental study in compression mode was conducted to get an information about the behavior of the panel that may be out of prediction in previous finite element analysis. The test showed that the failure of the panel was not determined by the secondary moment at the mid height of the panel, but by the delamination of the skin at a particular area. In this case, delamination occurred at the upper region of the panel, near the upper steel frame. The test led to a conclusion that panel sandwich fiberglassfoam with 2 layers combo mat fiberglass for each skin and with total thickness of 80 mm was adequate to resist the applied loads of one story residential building, particularly from compressive loads
