Abstract

Indonesia hosted the 23rd UNIMA Congress World Puppet Festival which was held in Gianyar, Bali, in April 2020. Indonesia presented the diversity of Indonesian puppets in the festival, one of which was Wayang Golek. The play of Dasamuka and Hanoman Obong is a puppet play with one perspective from the Ramayana story that is rarely raised. The host needs contemporary media in a series of events to introduce the diversity of Indonesian puppets to interact with visitors. The designer saw the potential of the media to introduce Hanoman Obong to the end of the festival. In this design, information that is considered in determining the design strategy is explored through qualitative research methods. Qualitative methods used include observation of Prambanan Temple relief replicas in the puppet museum, depth interviews of visual exploration results (character design, installation design and mural design) to wayang experts, mural / graffiti artist experts and to UNIMA Indonesia as the design stakeholder. Secondary data collection uses data obtained from literature studies on the story of the Hanoman Obong puppet and visualization of the play. The external media of this design is the interactive design of the Hanoman Obong mural installation pop-up environment for the World Puppet Festival 2020. In this design there are also activities and stories. There are two lines that are raised in the mural, which starts from the romance of Rama and Shinta and the second is Hanoman from Kiskenda. These two plots will meet in the Alengka area as the highlight of the story. The four main figures in Hanoman Obong are Hanoman, Rama, Shinta, and Rahwana (Dasamuka) as well as several extras such as Subali, Sugriwa and Trijata. The Forest and Kiskenda area booklets are designed to guide visitors to interact in order to provide experience and are expected to be able to recognize other points of view of the play Hanoman Obong. As a design requirement, visual identity and merchandise in the form of patches and sticker packs are also designed.
