Abstract

To achieve better life quality in the future, visually-impaired people need to start sharpening their sense in earlier age. Most toys for visually-impaired children are focused in braille education. But in fact, they need to train their sensitivity towards audio and physical movement as well. Toys for visually-impaired children are not much different than toys for normal children, it only need some modifications to make sure the toy is safe for those children. 4-6 year-old is the age when visually-impaired children education is not the age to start learning about braille yet, but more focused to playing stage, which is focused to enrich their ability before their begin learning braille (pre-braille ability). This research is aimed to create an educational toys to strengthen their pre-braille ability so they are also able to enhance their soft motor systems and basic concepts of pre-braille to improve their physical strength, co-ordination ability, perceptions, and tactile sensitivity which are needed in braille education afterwards, and train their mobility orientation. The methods used in this research are literature study, observation, and direct interview, in order to explore the respondents' activity on their regular basis, as the data used in the design stage. This toy adapts the concept of active, attractive, safe, and easy.
