Abstract

Surya Sembada Municipal Water Supply Enterprise of Surabaya City has six Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), namely: Karangpilang I, KarangpiIIang II, Karangpilang III, Ngagel I, Ngagel II, and Ngagel III. The raw water source of Karangpilang I, II, and III WTPs is Surabaya River. The abundance of microplastic (MP) in the raw water in 2019 was 5992 particles/L. In addition, 56.61 and 30.77 particles/L of microdebris were detected in tap water and reservoir water, respectively, in East Surabaya. The aims of this study were to determine the MP abundance and characteristics in the raw and produced water and to determine the efficiency of MP removal in each unit in Karangpilang III WTP.
This study was conducted in 6 operating units in Karangpilang III WTP, which consisted of intake, aerator, pre-sedimentation, flashmix, clearator, filtrasi, and disinfection units. Water samples were collected one time using grab sampling method at 06.00 A.M - 09.00 A.M. on 22 Februari 2020. The MP particles were extracted using Wet Peroxide Oxidation method, followed by filtration using vacuum filter and PTFE membrane with 0.2 μm pore size. The MP particles were separated manually from the filter into a clean petri dish using a tweezer under a dissecting microscope (Sunshine SZM45T-B1 and Dino Capture 2.0) with 40× - 60× magnification.
The MP abundance in Karangpilang III WTP decreased from 54.4 particles/L in raw water to 13 particles/L in produced water (removal efficiency 76.1%). Shapes of the MPs were dominated by fiber (94.1% in the raw water and 81.5% in the tap water). The MP sizes were dominated by a group size range of 351 - 1000 μm (42.3% in raw water and 35.4% in tap water). The MP colors were dominated by black (53.7% in raw water) and blue (33.8% in tap water). The MP abundance was fluctuated in each operating unit. The operational units that reduce significantly the MP abundance were aeration (62.17%), pre-sedimentation (33.33%), and disinfection (75.1%).
