Abstract

Geopolymer concrete is concrete which made without cement but replaced with fly ash. Fly ash independently has no binding or cementitious properties, therefore fly ash must be reacted with an alkaline activator. Alkaline activators used in this study are NaOH 10 M and Na2SiO3, and the ratio of activator was 1:1. This study uses class C fly ash (high-calcium fly ash) with a CaO level more than 10%. C class fly ash is rarely used in concrete-making geopolymer mixtures. This is because the type-C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete had a flash setting, due to increased hydraulic reaction, along with increasing calcium levels. This automatically causes geopolymer concrete based on type-C fly ash to be difficult to work with (low workability).
Giving admixture aims to improve workability which is showed by an increasing the slump value, and delay the occurrence of flash settings. Administration of admixture is limited to a maximum of 2% of the binder. In this study geopolymer concrete was made with admixture variation of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%. Sucrose is used for admixture. Then the tests carried out are: compressive strength at the age of 7, 14, 28, 56 days, slump test, permeability test, porosity test, and resistivity test. The mixing method used is the dry mixing method, where the alkaline activator used is the dry form (solid) and the fly ash is mashed together to make geopolymer cement. Furthermore, the geopolymer cement is mixed with water, fine and coarse aggregates to make geopolymer concrete.
The result is, the value in 4 variations of geopolymer concrete: V. Control (without admixture), V.1 (admixture 0.5%), V.2 (admixture 1%) and V.3 (admixture 1.5%) are respectively; 12.5 cm, 16.5 cm, 18.5 cm and 19.5 cm. While the average compressive strength of 3 cylinders of 28-day at 4 variations geopolymer concrete was consecutive: 16.58 MPa, 29.55 MPa, 35.29 MPa, and 29.05 MPa. So that the effective administration of admixture in this study is 1%, because it can improve the workability of geopolymer concrete without reducing its compressive strength. However, a significant increase in compressive strength needs to be further investigated, because there has never been a significant increase of compressive strength only with the addition of admixture.
