Abstract

Salt or bittern production waste has a high magnesium concentration which causes bittern to have great potential as a coagulant in water treatment. Fish processing wastewater contains a high organic load and if not treated properly this can cause eutrophication and death of organisms in water bodies. The treatment process that requires high costs causes the treatment of fish processing wastewater has not been carried out properly. Therefore, in this study, we will analyze the effectiveness of bittern as an alternative natural coagulant in the treatment of fish processing wastewater by providing variations in the dosage of bittern coagulant and variations in pH during the jar test analysis. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of bittern, determine the removal efficiency of TSS, BOD, COD, ammonium and phosphate using bittern as coagulant and determine the optimum dose of bittern and pH conditions to reduce the concentration of TSS, BOD, COD, ammonium and phosphate.
Fish processing wastewater is put into 18 beakers glass with a volume of 1L each. After that, bittern is added with dosage of 0; 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5 mL and stirred at 120 rpm for 1 minute. After the fast stirring is complete, it is continued with slow stirring at 40 rpm for 30 minutes. The effluent of the jar test analysis is allowed to rest for 15 minutes in order for the floc particles to settle. The variation of pH that is used in this research is without pH adjustment, pH 9 and pH 10.5.
Based on the jar test analysis with bittern as coagulant, the optimum pollutant removal efficiency for TSS is 94%, COD is 87.5%, BOD is 19.3%, ammonium is 40.8% and phosphate is 96.6%. The optimum dosage of bittern and pH condition is 1.5 mL with wastewater pH at 9. At pH 9 condition and bittern dosage of 1.5 mL, the coagulation flocculation process produces 1.73 mg of sediment per 1 L of fish processing wastewater. The estimated mass of sludge produced in the WWTP coagulation unit at Pasar Ikan Pabean is 15.57 grams per day.
