Abstract

Malang city's drinking water service is organized by Perumda Air Minum Tugu Tirta using a combination of pumping system (73%) and gravity system (27%). The dominance of the pumping system resulted in energy costs at Perumda Air Minum Tugu Tirta of Malang City (Rp 478 /m3) higher than the national average (Rp 345,77 /m3). Sumbersari Distribution System was chosen as the study location because the pump operation runs for 24 hours following customer usage fluctuations and it causes the energy usages to become inefficient.
This study analyzes alternative energy efficiency improvements in Sumbersari Distribution System through 2 (two) schemes. The first was through the construction of an Elevated Reservoir and the second was through the installation of a Variable Speed Drive (VSD). The methods of this study were the analysis of the total existing energy usage, technical analysis on the pipeline network with Epanet 2.0, design on both schemes along with pipeline analysis with Epanet 2.0, identification of energy efficiency improvements, calculation of cost estimates, and the analysis of financial feasibility.
The results showed that the two alternatives could increase the efficiency of the existing system. The construction of an Elevated Reservoir with a capacity of 129 m3 resulted in higher electrical energy savings compared to VSD. It had an electrical energy savings of 29.49% and Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) of about 0.37 kWh/m3. The other scheme, the installation of a VSD resulted in an electrical energy savings of 10.18% and SEC of about 0.35 kWh/m3. However, based on the results of technical analysis and financial feasibility, the VSD installation scheme was more recommended than the construction of an Elevated Reservoir. The selection was based on the fulfillment of all technical and financial aspects, with an NPV of about Rp 699.634.016, BCR of 1.64, PP less than 4 years, and IRR of 72,18%.
