Abstract

In 2027, a 2500 tons/year Sodium Lignosulfonate Surfactant Plant is expected to be operational in Kampar Regency, Riau, with Lignin as raw material. This location was chosen based on political/legal, supporting infrastructure, economical, and environmental considerations. The production process begins with pre-treatment, where lignin is treated through evaporators and precipitation tanks to obtain concentrated lignin. The next stage is sulfonation, where lignin reacts with sodium bisulfite solution as sulfonating agent and NaOH as catalyst. The result is sodium lignosulfonate surfactant (SLS) with lignin conversion of 89.96% mol. The purification process was carried out with methanol to remove the remaining sodium bisulfite. Sodium lignosulfonate is then processed through evaporator and spray dryer to reduce water content before being stored in storage tank. This plant aims to produce high quality sodium lignosulfonate surfactant to meet the demand of Asia Pacific market as water reducer in concrete manufacturing. The use of water reducer is predicted to increase until 2027, and this plant is expected to play an important role in meeting this demand.
