Abstract

The use of conventional plastics in human life has negative impacts on the environment. The imbalance between the increasing amount of plastic waste and environmentally unfriendly waste management leads to environmental pollution. A possible solution is to utilize degradable plastics. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a degradable polymer with potential to be developed as a substitute for conventional plastics. The synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) from lactic acid has been carried out using the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) method. The objective of this study is to synthesize polylactic acid (PLA) using Si/Al catalyst with variations of 0,3% (w/w) and 0,5% (w/w) through the ring-opening polymerization method, resulting in white PLA powder. The synthesized product is characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The synthesis mechanism of PLA involves three stages: oligomer formation, lactide formation, and PLA formation. Oligomer was formed through dehydration and polymerization by heating at temperatures of 80-120°C for 1 hour and 160-180°C for approximately 9 hours, respectively. Lactide, a cyclic ester compound, was formed through depolymerization by heating at temperatures of 180-210°C for approximately 12 hours. Polymerization at temperatures of 100-140°C for approximately 8 hours produced white PLA powder. FTIR spectra indicate that the difference in catalyst concentration does not affect the structural changes of PLA. The crystallinity of PLA0,3 and PLA0,5 is 63,04% and 48,05% respectively. The synthesized PLA exhibits higher crystallinity compared to pure PLA, indicating that the catalyst can enhance the crystallinity of PLA. The surface morphology of the synthesized PLA shows random and irregular sruface. TGA analysis reveals that the thermal stability of PLA0,3 is higher than that of PLA0,5.
