Abstract

Energy demand increase has a detrimental impact on the environment, particularly with fossil fuels as one of the main energy sources. The combustion of fossil fuels results in emissions that cause environmental pollution. To reduce pollution while still meeting energy needs, renewable energy sources are needed. One way to use environmentally friendly energy source is replacing diesel fuel with biodiesel in CI engines. Additionally, hydrogen fuel can be added as a carbon-free fuel. However, the use of these fuels leads to an increase in harmful NOx emissions. One way to reduce NOx emissions is by using an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. This study aims to investigate the performance and emissions of a dual-fuel diesel engine using B100 biodiesel and hydrogen fuel with varying EGR ratios of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% within a load range of 1000-4000 watts. From this study it was found that the addition of EGR system on a diesel dual fuel engine with B100 biodiesel-hydrogen fuel can improve the engine’s performance. The optimal EGR ratio is found at a ratio of 10% at 3000 watts of load with a power of 3509.71 watts, a torque of 16.77 Nm, and a BMEP of 4.27 bar. At optimal performance, there is an average increase from the 0% EGR ratio for BTE of 1.06% and a decrease in SFC of 0.12%. The addition of the EGR system to the engine tends to increase CO2 emissions and reduce O2. The addition of the EGR system can reduce NOx emissions by an average reduction of 52.3% compared to no EGR. As the EGR ratio increases, the absorption of NOx emissions increases. In contrast, with the addition of the EGR ratio, the smoke opacity of the engine exhaust is higher.
