Abstract

Coral reefs are well known to maintain the stability of ecological conditions in marine ecosystems, for example as a habitat, spawning grounds and shelter for various biota. However, coral ecosystems are also threatened by natural and anthropogenic factors. In 2019, most Indonesian coral reefs were in status of ‘poor’ or ‘fairly good’ with life coral cover was 33,82% and 37,38%. Similar condition occurred in Pasir Putih Situbondo, life coral cover in the area in 2016 ranged from 23,33-32,48%. Naturally, damaged coral reefs are able to undergo recovery through the processes of settlement and recruitment of the larvae resulting from sexual reproduction. Rate of recruitment affected by several factors, including the availability of hard and stabel substrate as a platform for attachment of the larvae. This study aimed to determine and compare the density, recruitment rate and genera richness of coral recruits on two types of natural substrates (dead coral and coral rubble) at two different depths (5 and 10 meters) in Batu Lawang and Pelita Bay reefs, Pasir Putih, Bungatan – Situbondo. Juvenile of corals (>5 cm in diameter) were identified and counted within a 1 x 1 m² quadrate with 5 replications. The average density of coral recruitment was 8.8-9.4 colonies/m² (high category) on dead coral substrate and 12-13.2 colonies/m² (very high category) on crushed coral substrate at Batu Lawang. At the Pelita Bay location, the density was 17.4-19.6 colonies/m² (very high category) for dead coral substrate and 20.2-21.4 colonies/m² (very high category) for coral rubble. There were 24 species of coral recruitment identified, in Batu Lawang between 11-12 species at 5 meters depth and 13-14 species at 10 meters while in Pelita Bay between 9-13 species at 5 meters and 11-13 species at 10 meters. The dominant coral recruitment species include Porites cylindrica, Porites rus, Porites sp, Pavona cactus and Fungia sp.
