Abstract

The offshore lands in Malaysia are a great source of oil and natural gas energy. Penyu Basin is a representative of an offshore Malaysian sedimentary basin that has been equitably studied but may yet contain undiscovered hydrocarbon potential. The studies using geophysical methods such as gravity were carried out to conduct a geophysical analysis of the Penyu Basin in Malaysia by extracting regional gravity anomaly grid data (Free Air anomalies) which will be further processed using the Oasis Montaj software. Utilizing various maps, including the residual anomaly map, analytic signal map, and THD anomaly map, the structural trend of the Penyu Basin is determined, revealing orientations along NE–SW and NW–SE directions qualitatively. A 3D Euler Deconvolution map is generated to provide quantitative estimations of gravity source locations and depths. Integration of gravity anomaly data with well and seismic data facilitates a detailed 2D forward modelling process. This enables the construction of a subsurface model, allowing for the delineation of significant geological structures. The geological analysis confirms the presence of both graben and half graben structures in the study area. The identification of three distinct tectonostratigraphic phases and spectral analysis reveals deep sources during the Pre-rift phase as the basement, intermediate sources during the Syn-rift phase represented by the Penyu formations in the Oligocene era in lacustrine to alluvial environment, and during the Post-rift phase marked by the development of the Terengganu formation followed by Pari formation which also identified as the intermediate sources that start developed in the Miocene era and the development of the Pilong formation in the Quaternary era as a shallow source in shallow marine environment. This discovery makes a substantial contribution to our overall understanding of the geological analysis of the Penyu Basin. The results emphasize the importance of ongoing geophysical studies and the integration of diverse datasets to advance the progress of natural resource exploration endeavours.
