Abstract

A hydrokinetic turbine is a "zero-head" hydroelectric power plant, in which energy is extracted from the kinetic energy of water flow, similar to a wind turbine. One example of a hydrokinetic turbine is a Darrieus type vertical axis hydrokinetic turbine. This study aims to modify the turbine by adding passive movable flaps with some length variations on the Darrieus type vertical axis hydrokinetic turbine. Thus it can utilize the drag force in increasing turbine torque and increasing the power that can be generated by the turbine. Computational Fluid Dynamics is used to determine phenomena that occur in fluid flow. Variations in flap position on the cord are 50% and 75%, with flap lengths of 100%, 75% and 50% respectively at a maximum flap opening angle of 90˚. The flow velocities used in this study were 0.29 m/s, 0.35 m/s, 0.375 m/s, and 0.4 m/s. From the research results, it was obtained that the most optimal variation and the highest Cp was a 100% length variation with a flap position at 75% of the cord for a TSR of 2.882, with value 0.0572. The length of the passive movable flap influences the area that can be exposed to flow. The longer the passive movable flap, the wider the area that collides with the flow and produces a greater drag force. This has an impact on the amount of torque and power coefficient produced by the turbine.
