Abstract

The number of interior design students in Indonesia has increased rapidly. For instance, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has seen a consistent rise in student enrollment from 2016 to 2023. Additionally, ISI Yogyakarta and Sebelas Maret University also offer interior design programs with a significant number of students. However, traditional or offline interior design education often leads to various problems and inefficiencies. This learning method faces challenges in terms of limited access to practical experience, substantial resource requirements, and restrictions in time and place flexibility. To address these challenges, InteriorSpace, a virtual reality based application, has been specifically designed for interior design education utilizing VR, particularly with Oculus Quest 2, Photon Unity Networking, and XR Interaction Toolkit, developed using Unity as the game engine and Laravel for authentication. With InteriorSpace, users can engage in virtual learning through the Live Classroom feature and collaborate on interior design projects using the Live Design feature. The application was developed using the Research & Development method with a 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), focusing on the following development stages: creating an authentication Application Programming Interface with Laravel, integrating Oculus Quest 2 with PUN and XR Interaction Toolkit in Unity, implementing multiplayer synchronization in Live Classroom and Live Design, developing a networked avatar selection system, and enhancing the voice chat feature with Photon Voice 2 in Unity3D. The application underwent black box testing to assess its functional capabilities with SideQuest and Unity editor script, as well as API testing through Postman. Usability aspects were also tested through questionnaires filled out by users using the Simple Random Sampling technique. The test results indicate that this VR-based application can provide a more flexible, collaborative, and efficient learning experience in interior design education compared to traditional methods.
