Abstract

The rapid growth of national industrial areas in Indonesia has caused electricity consumption as a basic need to also increase. However, in reality the process of fulfilling electricity supply is still dominated by power plants that use non-renewable energy such as coal. This is not in line with the government's program to make a transition by optimizing new renewable energy (EBT) in Indonesia, one of which is wind. In the process of converting wind into electrical energy, a vertical type Savonius wind turbine is often used as the medium. One of them is a turbine with an "S" structure or what is known as a Savonius wind turbine. In this research, the turbine shape was modified by varying the radius (r) and blade cross-sectional cutting angle (α). The simulation process uses the Navier-Stokes equations to represent fluids with incompressible, unviscous and unsteady properties which are solved using the SIMPLE method (Semi Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equation). This research process uses MATLAB software. Based on the simulation, it was found that the highest average fluid flow speed occurred when the turbine had r=0.9D and α=150° and the lowest average occurred when the turbine had r=3D and α=45°. Meanwhile, in the aspect of pressure distribution, when the Reynolds number is 500, the highest total pressure is obtained by the turbine with r=1.125D and α=120°, at the Reynolds number 2500, the highest total pressure is obtained by the turbine with r=1.5D and α=90°. Meanwhile, when the Reynolds number is 5000, the highest total pressure is received by the turbine with r=2.5D and α=60°.
