Abstract

The millennial generation is a generation that has the characteristics of being educated, collaborative, and having a more open mind compared to other generations. Supported by the potential for a demographic bonus in 2045, the millennial generation is considered to be an optimal object in conservation, preservation, and participation in tourism development. Participation in the development of heritage tourism is considered very important for sustainable tourism in the future. In addition to increasing the sense of belonging among residents and increasing pride in the value of the local area, participation can also provide economic improvement.
The level of participation is divided into 3 types. Ranking the highest participation consists of spontaneous participation, the community plays a role in decision making, induced participation plays a role in contributing resources they have and coercive participation where the community is only involved in tourism promotion activities. In line with the level of sense of place of the people of Pasuruan City which belongs to the 5th level out of a total of 6 levels and the proportion of the millennial generation that dominates the proportion of the population up to 26%, it is necessary to study more deeply about preferences in participating or tendencies in choosing based on perceptions, attitudes, and the value of each individual on the 3 levels of the types of participation.
This study aims to find a relationship between the characteristics of the people of Pasuruan City with preferences for participation in heritage tourism. The research method used is likert descriptive statistics to determine demographic characteristics, perception index and identification of participation selection preferences. Then, a cross tabulation analysis technique was used to determine the patterns and relationships based on the results of descriptive statistical analysis.
Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the majority of the characteristics and preferences of the millennial generation in Pasuruan City have a tendency to participate at the lowest level, namely coercive participation or only helping to carry out tourism promotion activities. The perception variables that have the most relationship with preference selection are interest and awareness. So that this variable can be the focus of the government when it wants to increase the selection of millennial generation preferences in increasing the level of participation, from the lowest participation to independent participation and induction.
