Abstract

Low carbon steel is a material commonly used in the marine industry because it has good mechanical properties and is easy to form. However, the corrosive sea air environment causes low carbon steel to corrode quickly. Various studies have been carried out to increase the durability of carbon steel, one of which is to offer a barrier in the form of an organic layer to protect the material from its environment. One of the organic coatings that are often used is epoxy paint. Epoxy paint has strong adhesion and good corrosion resistance. In extending the life of the epoxy paint, various kinds of pigments are added when applying the paint. This study uses ASTM A36 low carbon steel with variations in the composition of the addition of titanium dioxide powder of 0%, 1%, and 3% on the epoxy paint. This aims to determine the additional effect of titanium on epoxy paint adhesion strength and corrosion resistance. In the adhesive strength test using the pull off method, the highest value of adhesion strength was found in the composition of the mixture as much as 0%, which was 14.28 MPa. In testing the corrosion rate with the three-electrode cell method, the lowest corrosion rate value was obtained at the composition of the mixture as much as 3%, which was 0.0012566 mmpy. Based on the research results, the addition of titanium dioxide to the epoxy paint can affect the quality of the coating. The addition of 3% titanium dioxide powder can be recommended for application because it can reduce corrosion and the adhesion strength is still acceptable.
