Abstract

Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) is a three-dimensional cross-linked hydrophilic polymer, which can absorb and retain large amounts of water in a relatively short time. The synthesis of SAP from chitosan, starch with the addition of glutaraldehyde, was made in two variations, namely variation 1 (chitosan 0.5%, starch 2%, gluteraldehyde 25%) with variation 2 (chitosan 2%, starch 2%, glutaraldehyde 5%). Both variations of SAP were subjected to a degradation test to determine the comparison of mass degradatio time. SAP characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The FTIR test showed a reaction between the amine group found in chitosan and the aldehyde group found in glutaraldehyde. The FTIR test showed that there was a reaction of amines found in chitosan with aldehydes found in glutaraldehyde. In the SEM test, the surface of the SAP looks very rough and aggregates are formed. The degradation test showed that variation 1 was completely degraded on the 15th day and variation 2 was completely degraded on the 14th day
