Abstract

Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) at a Utility Unit belonging to a natural gas processing plant in Banyuwangi, East Java, has exhaust heat that has not yet been utilized. This research aims to design a waste heat recovery unit to be used as a source of electrical energy for the plant. The Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and Steam Turbine Generator were chosen as the design models, which will also be optimized in terms of performance and cost. The design optimization uses a genetic algorithm to optimize the dependent variables of performance or generated work (kW) and design cost (USD) against the independent design variables, including pressure level scheme, HRSG-STG feedwater flow, and GTG fuel flow. Using the HRSG-STG system to utilize GTG exhaust heat results in an increase in generated work by 44.99% for a single pressure level scheme, 45.78% for a two pressure level scheme, and 46.87% for a three pressure level scheme compared to using the GTG without exhaust heat utilization. The optimal HRSG-STG system design in terms of performance and cost was achieved with an HRSG-STG feedwater flow variation of 19500.0087 kg/hour and a GTG fuel flow variation of 3425.0032 kg/hour at a single pressure level, resulting in a work output of 3541.34 kW and a design cost of $9,035,110.04. From a techno-economic perspective, this design project is feasible as it has a rate of return greater than the discount rate (10%), with an IRR of 13.25%, a payback period of 5.37 years, and a project valuation in 2034 of $1,297,596.29.
