Abstract

Nowadays, the disclosure of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information is increasingly crucial for the banking industry. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ESG and its pillars on the financial performance of banks in Indonesia. The sample used consists of 11 banks in Indonesia for 8 years (2015-2022), with data sourced from Bloomberg Terminal and the Central Bureau of Statistics. Financial performance is measured by accounting-based indicators (Net Profit Margin) and market-based indicators (Tobin's Q). This study also adds bank-specific and macroeconomic control variables. The analysis method used is panel data regression. The results show that the implementation of ESG by banking companies has a positive impact on financial performance in the long term, but a negative impact on short-term financial performance. Analysis on each ESG pillar individually shows mixed results. The environmental pillar has a negative effect on short-term financial performance, but positive in the long term. Meanwhile, the social and governance pillars have no impact on short-term financial performance but have a positive impact in the long term. This study provides implications for stakeholders to consider ESG factors in decision-making because it affects the sustainability of banking companies in the long term.
