Abstract

Insulation of the generator stator windings is an important aspect that affects the operating reliability and life of the generator. This research focuses on the partial discharge (PD) characteristics due to internal defects in generator stator bar insulation. Tests were conducted by injecting AC voltage on the generator stator bar. This voltage was varied based on inception voltage, 4 kV, and 6.6 kV to see the effect of voltage magnitude on PD pattern and distribution. In addition to voltage variations, the stator bar is also varied based on internal stator insulation defects with a certain volume to see the effect of volume on the severity of insulation and PD pulse distribution patterns. The defects that will be varied are small voids, large voids, delamination, multi-voids, and a combination of delamination with multi-voids. The PD signal will be captured using a High Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) and then stored and displayed on an oscilloscope. Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) method with Heatscatter will be used to interpret the resulting PD characteristics. From the experimental results, the insulation resistance (IR) test using megger found that the larger the defect volume on the stator bar, the polarization index (PI), dielectric absorption ratio (DAR), and insulator resistance values decrease. The PDIV value in the defect variation has a different value. The larger the defect volume, the lower the inception voltage value. The higher the inception voltage, the greater the number of PD pulses and peak magnitude. However, the phase angle of the peak magnitude will be lower or have a phase shift to the left. The PD pattern generated from all internal discharge variations has a symmetry pattern in the positive cycle and negative cycle. This research can be used as an investigative step in generator maintenance and as a reference for further research.
