Abstract

With the effect of global warming seems more apparent day by day, the use of Electric Vehicles are becoming more common in attempt to reduce the impact of it. Many countries in the world have started the attempt to transition from using combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles to reduce the impact of global warming itself. One particular topic in the electric vehicle world that is being talked and improved about consistently is the energy storage system. The most common energy storage system of an electric vehicle is Lithium-Ion Battery. It has a high energy density, which means it can store a lot of energy that allows the Electric Vehicle to travel to distance. But the problem is, once it gets to a certain condition it needs to be replaced. It is not easy nor cheap to replace a Lithium-Ion Battery. High peak current that usually occurs from accelerating the EV is the main reason that escalates the battery aging. A unique solution to this problem is presented in this Final Project, which is to combine the work of Lithium-Ion Battery and Lithium-Ion Capacitor. Lithium-Ion Capacitors has a high-power density, which means Lithium-Ion Capacitors are able to exert a high level of power in a relatively fast time. In this Final Project, an assessment and observation of the effect of adding Lithium-Ion Capacitors to battery life in a Non-Transit Electric Vehicle is being discussed. A simulation using a specific software is used in this Final Project to simulate the battery life of the Non-Transit Electric Vehicle. By using a couple of power sharing methods, the battery will provide a low current requirement while the Lithium-Ion Capacitors will assist the battery in meeting the high current requirement. The result of this Final Project has shown that doing a hybridization of Lithium-Ion Batteries and Lithium-Ion Capacitors does give extra lifetime of the battery of the Electric Vehicle. An increase of 50.4% with using Rule-Based Power Sharing Method. An increase of 7.4% with using Low Pass Filter Power Sharing Method.
