Abstract

Boilers, which produce heat and steam to support work in industrial systems, are very important, because the versatility of these two work products can be used for mechanical drives and heating. Boilers that work in conditions of extreme heat and pressure require regular maintenance and upkeep. Both of these things can be supported by estimating the life of the boiler based on the pressure working within it. This research uses von Mises stress as a method to measure how much stress occurs in the boiler in general, by simulating using Finite Element Analysis software. The von Mises stress obtained will be compared with the yield strength of the type of material used to determine whether plastic deformation will occur in the boiler walls. This research varies the material and pressure given to the boiler which is considered based on the boiler data sheet, with material variations using SA 516 Grade 70 and SA 285 Grade A while the pressure variations are 11 bar, 14 bar and 18 bars. The results show that the von Mises stress changes as the pressure increases and plastic deformation occurred in variation of 18 bar pressure with SA 285 material.
