Abstract

To maintain the operational reliability of the industrial system in ensuring the continuity of its production, the electric power system plays a very crucial role. The availability of electrical power must be maintained so that the production process can continue. However, the distribution of power does not rule out the possibility of a failure in the power system. The electrical system in this nickel smelter plan is divided into two generation segments, namely for the furnace load sub-system and auxiliary load sub-system. In operation, the furnace grid and auxiliary grid work separately with both grids connected to each other by a DC link system to help the power shortage when there is a disturbance on one side of the sub-system by transferring power from the furnace grid and auxiliary grid. All systems and processes on the furnace side are fully controlled from the auxiliary side, so both the furnace and auxiliary sides must be kept stable to keep the operation of the entire system running properly. The problem currently faced is that when a transient disturbance occurs in the system, it always ends in a blackout. In accordance with the initial assumption, the system failure that occurred was due to the existence of a DC link that did not work effectively. This is due to the lack of reactive power on the side of the disturbed sub-system that should get supply from the DC link. Therefore, network reconfiguration measures were required to improve system operation. The first reconfiguration carried out was to remove the use of the DC link as an alternative to fault recovery, then continued with the second reconfiguration by adding a 150 kV AC transmission line between the two sub-systems as an interconnection to further strengthen the system. In this final project, the problems discussed focus on transient stability analysis accompanied by disturbance tests for each condition, namely existing, DC link removal, and the addition of 150 kV AC transmission lines.
