Abstract

=============================================================
Ride-hailing services have brought significant changes to the online transportation sector. Although ride-hailing platforms offer work flexibility to their driver partners, drivers often feel that the systems and regulations implemented hinder them from getting orders. In response to these obstacles, several drivers engage in workarounds or adaptive actions to overcome the existing challenges. This study aims to identify the forms and causes of workarounds carried out by driver partners at the operational level of ride-hailing services. The main focus of this research is on the adaptive actions that driver partners take when facing obstacles that hinder them from getting orders.
This study is qualitative research involving interviews and field observations for data collection. The interview results were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to identify the forms and causes of workarounds at the operational level of ride-hailing services. The open-coding method was used to identify the main patterns in the collected data. The results from open coding were then further analyzed to understand the relationship between the forms of workarounds and the underlying causes.
The analysis of this research identified five main forms of workarounds: the use of MOD APK, the use of fake GPS, multihoming, taking offline orders, and account jockeying practices. These five workarounds are driven by eight main causes: economic needs, weak regulations, environmental and peer influence, cost efficiency, time efficiency, business process complexity, account suspension, and partnership termination (PM). Further analysis showed that economic needs are the primary cause behind the workarounds carried out by ride-hailing service driver partners.
