Abstract

Flame spray coating is still frequently used due to its low cost, more practical use, high deposition rate and efficiency, and the use of a variety of materials, without being limited to the shape and size of components. The mechanical properties and durability of coating materials with nickel-based alloys, especially at high temperature conditions, can be improved by the addition of ceramics. Research related to the development of modified NiCrBSi/Al2O3 composite coating materials continues. The post-annealing treatment given to the flame spray coating can change its microstructure and mechanical properties by increasing adhesion and hardness properties, reducing the amount of porosity, and influencing wear resistance properties. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the composition ratio of feed material in NiCrBSi/Al2O3 flame spray powder coatings on 304 stainless steel. The NiCrBSi/Al2O3 ratio variations (wt.%) used were 80/20, 70/30, and 60/40. Post-annealing treatment was also carried out to analyze changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the coating process results. The temperature variation is based on the results of DSC test analysis of NiCrBSi flame spray coating, which were at temperatures of 890℃ and 970℃. In this study, the post-annealing treatment process was carried out using a furnace with a holding time of 30 minutes. The results of as-sprayed and post-annealed coating applications were tested to determine structural and morphological properties with metallographic, SEM-EDX, and XRD testing, as well as mechanical testing in the form of Vickers microhardness, pull-off, and wear resistance testing. The results of microstructure observations show an insignificant effect on the variation of Al2O3 ceramic additions. The structure of the coating results looks diverse and inhomogeneous character. In the case of post-annealing treatment, a more homogeneous structure changes and a diffusion process occurs in the interface layer. The results of mechanical testing changes along with changes in microstructure. The highest increase in hardness was obtained in the as-sprayed coating results with the composition of adding 40% Al2O3 of 955.71 HV0.3. The highest adhesion strength value was obtained at 970°C post-annealing treatment of 11.21 ± 1.42 MPa.
