Abstract
Ammonia contamination in wastewater is a common occurrence in the industrial world because ammonia itself can be used in various industries. However, ammonia has a significant bad effect on both the environment and human health. To prevent the effect from occurring, proper wastewater treatment is needed to eliminate the ammonia content before it is being dumped to the environment. In this report, the ammonia is not just simply being eliminated but it is also used as a useful product, ammonium sulfate, commonly used as a fertilizer. The process of producing ammonium sulfate, includes the utilization of a stripping column to strip the ammonia gas (NH₃) from water. The ammonia gas obtained is then further processed using an absorption column where a process called wet-acid scrubbing using H₂SO₄ is happening. This second process will result in the production of liquid ammonium sulfate. The liquid product will be turned into solid after going through three different processes; evaporation, crystallization and centrifugation. In the end of the whole process, 99% composition of ammonium solid with a rate of 390.53 kg/hr has been successfully produced. The liquid effluent from the process also goes through some additional treatment so that it can be safely discharged with a pH of 7.05 and temperature of 33°C. The process is also equipped with some feedback controller strategy presented in the process control flow diagram. As for the economic analysis, the return of investment (ROI) has been found to be approximately 2.42%, considering the utility and electricity cost, capital cost and profits obtained. Lastly, in this report, safety information for both equipment and chemicals used are also covered.
