Abstract

Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) has been a primary fuel for ships, yet its environmental impact, characterized by high sulphur emissions and other pollutants, has led to a pressing need for greener alternatives. In response, several low-sulphur alternative fuels have emerged as promising options to replace HFO, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, and ammonia. These alternatives not only offer reduced emissions but also support the implementation of green shipping practices in line with international regulations such as the IMO's sulphur cap regulations. However, transitioning to these alternative fuels requires a thorough analysis of their environmental impact, economic viability, strength and limitations. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, including literature review and data analysis, to offer practical insights and recommendations to support the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable shipping practices.
