Abstract

An Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) is an aquatic vehicle that can operate without a crew. USVs are the right and lightweight solution for various applications, from surveying to military purposes. This is supported by the advantages offered, such as lower operating costs, higher levels of automation, higher levels of personnel safety, and of course the flexibility of the operating area. Therefore, USVs are widely used in various purposes, especially in the military and research fields. In its use, especially in these two fields, maneuverability or maneuvering performance is one of the key factors for the reliability of USVs in carrying out missions so that USVs are required to have the best possible maneuverability. To obtain the best possible maneuverability, it is necessary to improvise the steering performance of the USV which is influenced by its control system. Improvisation of the USV control system can be done in several aspects, one of which is steering equipment such as rudder. However, there has not been much research on steering equipment for USVs, especially rudder, while steering equipment itself is one of the key components in USV maneuverability like on a ship. Therefore, research was conducted to improve maneuverability performance through changes in the geometric characteristics of the rudder. The changes are made through optimization to modify the geometric characteristics of the rudder until the most optimal rudder character is obtained according to the parameters and variables inputted for the rudder foil variations consisting of NACA 0012, NACA 16-018, and NACA 64(3)-018. The optimization is performed through a multi-objective genetic algorithm with the objective function of minimizing the turning circle diameter through increasing the CL and CD coefficients. The optimization program is made with MATLAB programming language integrated with Python for turning circle prediction program. From the optimization on NACA 0012, NACA 16-018, and NACA 64(3)-018 foils as the base foil, the optimal rudder foil is obtained which is then fabricated for experimental purposes. From the experiments conducted, the smallest rudder foil turning circle diameter was achieved by the NACA 64(3)-018 foil variation of 2.6895 m which is 20.28% smaller than the turning circle diameter of the existing rudder.
