Abstract

Based on the literature analysis, the physical environment and local community have the potential to influence the level of physical activity and overall health of older people. In Asia, city parks are often the center of social and health life for older people. In Europe, city parks such as Hampstead Heath in London or Vondelpark in Amsterdam also play an important role in improving the quality of life of older people. In general, parks on both continents demonstrate how well-considered design can improve the quality of life of older people through increasing accessibility, physical activity, and social interaction. However, the design approach and culture of park use may vary depending on the local context and the needs of the local community. Japan is known as a country with a large elderly population. This is proven by the Japanese population pyramid where the number of people over 70 years old is greater than the number of people aged 40-49 years old. All residents, including the elderly, need public spaces and environments that have the potential to improve health, provide guaranteed security, and comfort. One of the Japanese government's efforts is to provide the Citizen's Forest Minuma Green Center city park for this purpose. However, not all city parks or public spaces are in accordance with the preferences of city residents who enjoy them, especially the elderly. This study will examine how friendly it is to the elderly. This study uses a qualitative descriptive model with primary data. The research variables consist of access & linkages, safety, universal design, comfort & image. The data is then processed using the scoring method to obtain output according to the research objectives. This research found that Minuma Green Center plays a significant role in improving the quality of life of the elderly through well-planned urban design. Through an integrated approach of literature analysis, field observations, and questionnaires, this study revealed that this urban park successfully created an environment that supports the physical health and social well-being of the elderly in Kita Ward, Saitama.
