Abstract

Deformation is an inevitable part of the shipbuilding process at certain points. Deformation
happens when the blocks are raised at an incorrect pad eye position. This study's objective was
to ascertain the behavior of the ship's structural components during the lifting and assembly
procedure. The fundamental structural design was based on a 164.000 DWT Class Crude Oil
Carrier’s starboard double bottom. The methodology for the examination uses the double
bottom structures modeled in 3D. This study also uses the finite element approach to examine
stresses and deformations on the bottom structures during the block lifting among the different
eye pad variations. Reduction of stress and deformation is often associated with increasing the
size of eye pads. The best pad eye variation and placement is suggested, causing the least
amount of stress and deformation to the Oil Carrier's double bottom structures.
