Abstract

According to "Introducing Architectural Theory: Debating a Discipline" by Korydon Smith, one of the theories studied and analyzed is Simplicity and Complexity through the contributions of Marcel Breuer, Robert Venturi, and Vittorio Gregotti. While Breuer focuses on functionalism and simplicity, Venturi on complexity and an enriched language for architecture, Gregotti discovers meaning in depth and time related to simplicity. This debate relates to the essence of architecture linked explicitly to Bali, a struggle to preserve its cultural identity amidst globalization and tourism. Using Plowright's Concept-Based Framework, this design process translates into analogies that were inspired by Tri Hita Karana concerning using light to note a relationship between heaven and human beings, landscape or harmony with nature, and communal space or social bonding. Each one of these analogies is integrated into the design of the library to let visitors experience the deep essence of Balinese philosophy. The vision for this space is one of harmony, where spiritual, natural, and communal dimensions blend, thus reflecting the Balinese essence but catering to the modern-day demands of community engagement and environmental sustainability. This design project addresses the huge challenge of maintaining proper tourism and cultural preservation. This library would work as a place of learning, a community center, and a contribution to help maintain Balinese cultural identity. The initiative represented the potential for traditional philosophies to bear on the current trend of architecture and the importance of cultural contexts in design. Tri Hita Karana Sanctuary Library is a project that is targeted to achieve a balance between cultural preservation and modern use, offering architecturally sustainable and culturally responsive solutions.
